Understanding the Condition

One Point. Thirty Years of Research. Consistent Results.

PC-6 (Neiguan) — the pericardium point on the inner wrist — is one of the most extensively studied acupoints in the world, specifically for nausea and vomiting. The evidence spans pregnancy nausea, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV), motion sickness, and functional nausea.

The mechanism is neurological: PC-6 stimulation activates the median nerve, which transmits signals to the vagal complex in the brainstem — the neural centre governing nausea and vomiting. This produces a direct anti-emetic effect through endorphin and serotonin modulation at the chemoreceptor trigger zone.

TCM Perspective

In TCM, nausea is Stomach Qi rebelling upward — the Stomach's descending function reversed. The pattern may involve Cold, Heat, Phlegm, or deficiency, each requiring a different supporting treatment alongside PC-6.

Mechanism of Action

How Acupuncture Stops Nausea

PC-6 (Neiguan)

The primary anti-nausea point. Activates the median nerve → brainstem vagal complex → anti-emetic effect. Demonstrated in multiple Cochrane Reviews across pregnancy, CINV, and PONV.

ST-36 (Zusanli)

Supports gastric emptying and Stomach Qi descension — addressing the gastric motility component of nausea.

CV-12 (Zhongwan)

Middle Jiao regulation — the TCM centre of digestive function. Combined with PC-6 for functional nausea.

Chemotherapy-induced nausea

Anti-Damp-Heat protocol addressing the toxic accumulation pattern, combined with PC-6 and ST-36.

Functional nausea

Liver-Stomach harmonisation for nausea driven by anxiety and stress.

Evidence Base

What the Research Says

Acupuncture for nausea has one of the most consistent evidence bases in the entire field. A Cochrane Review of 59 trials (7,667 patients) found PC-6 stimulation significantly reducing nausea across all clinical contexts. Specific to CINV, a 2006 review found acupuncture reducing acute vomiting episodes significantly. For PONV, a 2020 meta-analysis confirmed PC-6 equivalent to standard anti-emetic drugs. Wristbands stimulating PC-6 are now commonly used in hospital settings — a recognition of the…

Patient Experience
I had severe nausea from chemotherapy. The standard anti-nausea medication helped partially but I was still vomiting after each cycle. our team treated me the day before and the day after each cycle. The improvement was significant — I could eat normally within 24 hours of treatment instead of 4–5 days.
