Understanding the Condition

The Side Effect Burden That Standard Oncology Incompletely Addresses

Modern chemotherapy regimens are more effective than ever — and their side effects remain one of the most significant determinants of treatment tolerance, dose delivery, and quality of life during cancer care. The most clinically significant side effects are chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), fatigue, immune suppression, mucositis, alopecia, cognitive impairment (chemobrain), anxiety and depression, and sleep disruption.

Standard supportive care — 5HT3 antagonists and NK1 antagonists for CINV, G-CSF for neutropenia, opioids for pain — has improved significantly. But CIPN has no effective pharmacological prevention, fatigue and cognitive impairment have no standard treatment, and the cumulative symptom burden of sustained chemotherapy remains incompletely managed.

Acupuncture does not treat cancer. It addresses the side effects of cancer treatment — with a quality and quantity of evidence that has placed it in national cancer care guidelines internationally, including those of the Society for Integrative Oncology, ASCO, and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

TCM Perspective

In TCM, chemotherapy-related toxicity reflects the accumulation of toxic Damp-Heat in the channels and organs, combined with progressive Qi, Blood, and Kidney depletion from the treatment's constitutional impact.

How Acupuncture Reduces Chemotherapy Side Effects

CINV — nausea and vomiting

PC-6 (Neiguan) is the most extensively studied acupoint for nausea — with a Cochrane Review of 59 trials confirming significant reduction in acute and delayed CINV. Timed treatment before and after chemotherapy infusion dramatically reduces the nausea and vomiting burden.

Peripheral neuropathy (CIPN)

Acupuncture stimulates nerve regeneration through NGF upregulation and improves peripheral microcirculation — directly addressing the numbness, tingling, and pain of chemotherapy-induced neuropathy. A 2019 RCT found acupuncture reducing CIPN symptoms in 80% of patients.

Fatigue

Cancer-related fatigue — the most prevalent and debilitating cancer symptom — responds to acupuncture through mitochondrial support, HPA axis regulation, and sleep architecture restoration.

Immune support

Acupuncture maintains NK cell and T-cell activity during chemotherapy-induced immunosuppression — supporting the immune function that determines infection resistance between cycles.

Cognitive function

Chemobrain — post-chemotherapy cognitive impairment — responds to acupuncture's neuroinflammation-reducing and cerebral blood flow-improving effects.

Evidence Base

What the Research Says

Acupuncture for chemotherapy support has the strongest evidence base of any integrative oncology intervention. ASCO's 2017 integrative oncology guidelines recommend acupuncture for CINV, pain, and fatigue in cancer patients. The Society for Integrative Oncology's updated guidelines place acupuncture as a Grade A recommendation for nausea in cancer care. Memorial Sloan Kettering and MD Anderson Cancer Center have integrated acupuncture into their standard supportive care programmes. Multiple syst…

Treatment at Balancepoint

Chemotherapy Support at Balancepoint

01

CINV prevention

Sessions timed to chemotherapy cycles — ideally the day before infusion and 1–2 days after. PC-6 and ST-36 protocol.

02

CIPN management

Weekly sessions during and after chemotherapy. Nerve regeneration and microcirculation protocol.

03

Fatigue and immune support

Weekly sessions between chemotherapy cycles. Spleen, Kidney, and immune tonification.

04

Ongoing support

Frequency adjusted to the patient's tolerance and treatment schedule. Gentler, fewer-point sessions during neutropenic periods.

Patient Experience
I had breast cancer and 6 cycles of chemotherapy. The nausea was severe after the first two cycles. My oncologist supported me adding acupuncture. From cycle 3 onwards — with Priya Samwani treating me the day before and the day after each infusion — the nausea was manageable for the first time. The neuropathy in my feet also reduced significantly.

Yes — with appropriate precautions. During neutropenic periods, sterile technique is stringently observed and fewer insertion points may be used. Balancepoint has extensive experience with oncology patients.
Yes — always. Balancepoint recommends full disclosure to your oncology team. Most oncologists support integrative approaches and many actively encourage acupuncture alongside chemotherapy.
Acupuncture does not influence the oncological effect of chemotherapy. It addresses the side effects that reduce treatment tolerance and quality of life.
