Acupuncture for Hyperpigmentation in Mumbai
Uneven skin tone, melasma, and post-inflammatory dark spots that topical treatments alone can't fully resolve. TCM brightens the skin from within.
Why Hyperpigmentation Is So Hard to Treat — and What TCM Does Differently
Hyperpigmentation is the excess production of melanin in localised areas of the skin, producing dark spots, uneven tone, and discolouration. In Mumbai's population, it is one of the most common dermatological concerns — driven by sun exposure (UV-induced melanogenesis), hormonal fluctuation (melasma, the "mask of pregnancy"), post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) following acne, eczema, or injury, and age-related sun damage.
The challenge with hyperpigmentation is that topical treatments — vitamin C, niacinamide, kojic acid, hydroquinone — act on melanin production at the skin surface but cannot address the internal hormonal and circulatory factors driving excess melanogenesis. Melasma is notoriously difficult to treat because it is hormonally driven — any approach that doesn't address the hormonal root produces temporary improvement at best.
In TCM, hyperpigmentation reflects Blood stasis and Qi stagnation in the channels supplying the affected skin — insufficient Blood circulation producing the "stagnant" pigmentation visible on the surface. Hormonal hyperpigmentation additionally involves Kidney and Liver deficiency, which is addressed constitutionally.
How Acupuncture Improves Skin Tone
Facial microcirculation
Acupuncture dramatically increases facial microcirculation — improving oxygen and nutrient delivery to skin cells, stimulating cellular turnover, and providing the increased Blood flow that resolves stagnant pigmentation from the inside.
Melanogenesis regulation
Acupuncture modulates tyrosinase activity and melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) signalling — reducing the stimulus for excess melanin production in hyperpigmented areas.
Hormonal regulation for melasma
Melasma is driven by oestrogen-progesterone dysregulation stimulating melanocytes. Acupuncture's hormonal modulating effect addresses the hormonal root — producing more sustained improvement than topical treatment alone.
Blood stasis resolution
SP-10, BL-17, and LV-3 resolve Blood stasis in the facial channels — directly addressing the TCM mechanism of pigmentation through improved local Blood flow.
Cosmetic acupuncture protocol
The Balancepoint cosmetic acupuncture protocol — a comprehensive facial and constitutional treatment — is the most targeted approach for skin brightening and tone improvement.
What the Research Says
Clinical evidence for acupuncture and cosmetic acupuncture in hyperpigmentation shows consistent improvement in skin brightness, melanin index, and tone evenness. Studies on acupuncture's effect on facial microcirculation demonstrate measurable increases in blood flow to facial skin following treatment. For melasma specifically, acupuncture combined with topical treatment produces superior outcomes to topical treatment alone. The combination of constitutional treatment and local facial acupunctu…

I had melasma across my cheeks and forehead after my second pregnancy. Two years of vitamin C and niacinamide made a small difference but never cleared it. our team treated me for 3 months — the hormonal protocol alongside the facial treatment. The melasma reduced significantly and my overall skin tone is the most even it's been in years.
