Acupuncture for Morning Sickness in Mumbai
Nausea and vomiting that makes the first trimester unbearable. Acupuncture is one of the most evidence-supported and safest treatments available.
Nausea in Pregnancy — When "It Will Pass" Isn't Enough
Morning sickness affects 70–80% of pregnant women, typically beginning at 4–6 weeks and peaking at 8–12 weeks. For most women, it resolves by 14–16 weeks. For others — including those with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), the severe form — nausea and vomiting persist throughout pregnancy, causing dehydration, weight loss, nutritional deficiency, and profound quality-of-life impairment.
The mechanism involves rising hCG, oestrogen, and progesterone triggering the chemoreceptor trigger zone in the brainstem. Serotonin and substance P signalling are implicated.
Medical management — antihistamines, antiemetics, vitamin B6 — is limited by concerns in early pregnancy and often provides incomplete relief. Acupuncture, and specifically stimulation of PC-6 (Neiguan), is one of the most studied and evidence-supported interventions for pregnancy nausea — with WHO endorsement, Cochrane evidence, and an excellent safety record.
In TCM, morning sickness is Stomach Qi rebelling upward — the Stomach's normal descending function disrupted by the rising energies of pregnancy. The Chong vessel (the Sea of Blood that supports the uterus) is full in early pregnancy and easily disturbs the Stomach channel.
How Acupuncture Relieves Pregnancy Nausea
PC-6 (Neiguan) — the anti-nausea point
PC-6, on the inner wrist, has a well-documented anti-emetic effect — reducing nausea signals through the vagal-brainstem pathway. It is the single most studied acupoint in the entire acupuncture literature, with specific application to pregnancy nausea.
Stomach Qi descension
ST-36 (Zusanli) and CV-12 (Zhongwan) restore the Stomach's normal descending function, directly addressing the rebellious Qi pattern underlying morning sickness.
Spleen strengthening
SP-3 and SP-4 support the Spleen's digestive function, which is frequently overwhelmed in early pregnancy and contributes to nausea through Damp accumulation.
Hyperemesis gravidarum
More intensive treatment including SP-8 and BL-20 is used for severe cases requiring stronger Qi regulation.
What the Research Says
Acupuncture for pregnancy nausea is among the most evidence-rich applications in the field. A Cochrane Review of acupuncture for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (9 trials, 1,402 women) found PC-6 acupuncture significantly reducing nausea compared to sham acupuncture and no treatment. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists lists acupuncture as an appropriate non-pharmacological option for pregnancy nausea. The WHO lists nausea and vomiting as Category 1 indications for acupuncture…

I had hyperemesis with my first pregnancy and was hospitalised twice. With my second pregnancy I started acupuncture at 6 weeks. I still had nausea but it was manageable — I never needed IV fluids and didn't miss a day of work. The difference was remarkable.
