Acupuncture for Shoulder & Back Pain in Mumbai
From rotator cuff strain to thoracic tension — acupuncture addresses the muscle, joint, and nerve causes of shoulder and upper back pain. We come to you.
The Shoulder-Back Complex — Why Pain in One Drives Pain in the Other
Shoulder and upper back pain rarely exist in isolation. The scapular stabilisers, rotator cuff, trapezius, rhomboids, and thoracic paraspinals function as an integrated unit. Weakness or overload in one structure shifts demand to the others — creating the pattern of diffuse shoulder-and-back pain that is near-universal in Mumbai's desk-working and commuting population.
Common presentations include: rotator cuff tendinopathy and impingement, thoracic facet joint pain, rhomboid and trapezius trigger points, teres major and infraspinatus strain, and referred pain from the cervical spine. Each presentation looks different, occurs for different reasons, and requires targeted treatment.
In TCM, shoulder and upper back pain most commonly involves obstruction in the Small Intestine, Triple Warmer, and Bladder meridians. Underlying patterns include Blood stasis (fixed, sharp pain), Wind-Cold-Damp obstruction (aching, worse in cold or damp weather), or Qi and Blood deficiency (dull, chronic aching with fatigue).
How Acupuncture Relieves Shoulder and Upper Back Pain
Rotator cuff treatment
Needling of the rotator cuff muscles — supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, teres minor — at their trigger points and motor points deactivates the muscle tension and tendon irritation driving impingement and shoulder pain.
Scapular stabiliser release
Rhomboid, middle trapezius, and serratus anterior needling addresses the scapular dyskinesis that underlies most shoulder pain — restoring the glenohumeral-scapulothoracic rhythm needed for pain-free shoulder movement.
Thoracic facet treatment
Huatuojiaji and thoracic paraspinal needling reduces facet joint loading and paraspinal muscle tension in the upper back.
Referred pain treatment
Where shoulder or upper back pain originates from cervical spine pathology, treatment addresses the cervical root as well as the peripheral manifestation.
What the Research Says
Acupuncture for shoulder pain has a well-established evidence base. A 2017 Cochrane Review found acupuncture more effective than sham treatment for shoulder pain at short and medium-term follow-up. For rotator cuff tendinopathy specifically, multiple RCTs show acupuncture producing superior outcomes to physiotherapy alone. The WHO lists shoulder conditions as Category 1 indications for acupuncture.

Shoulder & Back Pain Treatment at Balancepoint
Acute shoulder or upper back pain
4–6 sessions, twice weekly. Significant relief expected within 3–4 sessions.
Rotator cuff tendinopathy / impingement
8–10 session protocol. Local needling combined with electroacupuncture for tendon repair stimulation.
Chronic upper back tension (trapezius / rhomboid)
6–8 sessions with cupping for fascial release. Highly effective for desk-worker presentations.
Years of laptop work had left me with constant upper back pain and a shoulder I couldn't raise above 90 degrees. Physio helped temporarily. Acupuncture with Dr. Priya fixed it in 8 sessions. The difference was that she treated the whole chain — not just where it hurt.
