Moxibustion —
TCM’s Ancient Thermal Therapy
A Traditional Chinese Medicine thermal therapy using dried mugwort to warm meridians, strengthen Yang Qi, and treat cold-type conditions, fertility, and chronic pain.
What Is Moxibustion
Therapeutic heat.
Not just warmth — warming Qi.
Moxibustion is a Traditional Chinese Medicine thermal therapy in which dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) — called “moxa” — is burned near or on specific acupoints to warm the meridians, strengthen Yang Qi, and stimulate circulation. It is one of TCM’s oldest modalities, often used alongside acupuncture for enhanced effect.
Moxa combustion generates far-infrared radiation and heat that penetrates 3–5cm below the skin surface. This activates acupoints, increases local circulation, reduces inflammation, and tonifies Yang — the body’s warming, activating energy.
How Moxibustion Works
Warming meridians,
tonifying Yang.
Three methods,
one therapeutic goal
Indirect moxa — moxa stick held above the skin, no contact.
Moxa on needle — moxa burned on the handle of an inserted needle, directing heat through the acupoint.
Salt moxa / ginger moxa — moxa placed on a medium over specific points for deep, penetrating warmth.
Far-infrared heat
and Yang tonification
Many chronic conditions — painful periods, poor circulation, digestive weakness, low immunity — arise from a deficiency of Yang (warming energy). Moxibustion directly tonifies Yang, warms the meridians, and restores metabolic vitality that acupuncture alone cannot achieve.
“Moxibustion at acupoint Zhiyin (BL67) successfully corrected breech presentation in 75.4% of cases compared to 47.7% in the control group at 33–35 weeks gestation.”
