Understanding the Condition

The Most Common Joint Condition — and Why Pain Management Alone Is Insufficient

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the progressive degeneration of articular cartilage, producing joint pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion, and crepitus. In India, OA affects an estimated 15% of the population and is the leading cause of disability in older adults. Knee OA is the most prevalent, followed by hip, hand, and spinal facet joint OA.

Standard management is a stepwise escalation of pain relief: paracetamol, NSAIDs, cortisone injection, hyaluronic acid injection, and ultimately joint replacement. This approach manages pain but does not address the central sensitisation that amplifies OA pain, the muscle weakness that accelerates joint loading, or the systemic metabolic factors that drive cartilage breakdown.

Acupuncture's role in OA is not cartilage restoration. It is consistent, significant pain reduction — addressing the neurological, inflammatory, and muscular components of OA pain in a way that improves function and quality of life, often reducing the need for analgesics and deferring or avoiding the need for surgical intervention.

TCM Perspective

In TCM, OA is understood as Kidney and Liver deficiency (the constitutional root) combined with Bi syndrome obstruction (the symptomatic expression). Treatment addresses both.

Mechanism of Action

How Acupuncture Relieves OA Pain

Central pain modulation

OA pain is significantly amplified by central sensitisation — the nervous system's learned hypersensitivity to joint pain signals. Acupuncture downregulates this central amplification, reducing pain out of proportion to the structural damage.

Local anti-inflammatory effect

Acupuncture reduces synovial inflammation in OA joints through cytokine modulation, decreasing the inflammatory component of OA pain.

Periarticular muscle treatment

In knee OA, weakness and trigger points in the quadriceps, vastus medialis, and popliteal muscles significantly increase joint loading. Acupuncture addresses these, reducing mechanical pain generation.

Endorphin release

Provides analgesia that complements topical and oral pain management.

Evidence Base

What the Research Says

Acupuncture for osteoarthritis has one of the largest and most consistent evidence bases in TCM research. The Acupuncture Trialists Collaboration analysis (29,000+ patients, 39 RCTs) found acupuncture significantly superior to sham and standard care for OA pain. For knee OA specifically, a 2014 meta-analysis in the Annals of Internal Medicine found acupuncture producing clinically meaningful pain reduction and functional improvement. NICE recommends acupuncture for chronic primary pain including…

Treatment at Balancepoint

Osteoarthritis Treatment at Balancepoint

01

Knee OA

10–12 sessions. Local knee needling at ST-35, SP-9, EX-LE-4, and GB-34 combined with quadriceps trigger point treatment and distal Kidney/Liver tonification points.

02

Hip OA

10–12 sessions. Local hip needling combined with gluteal and TFL trigger point treatment.

03

Hand OA

8–10 sessions. Local finger and wrist needling with systemic anti-inflammatory protocol.

04

Maintenance

Monthly sessions maintain benefit and reduce OA progression rate. Many patients maintain good function on monthly acupuncture for years, deferring or avoiding surgery.

Patient Experience
My orthopaedic surgeon said I needed a knee replacement. I was 58 and wanted to wait. After 12 sessions with Dr. Priya my knee pain reduced by about 70% and I was back to walking 5km daily. Three years later I still haven't needed the surgery.

Frequently Asked

Your Questions Answered

No. Acupuncture does not restore cartilage. What it consistently achieves is significant pain reduction and functional improvement — often to a degree that makes surgery unnecessary or defers it substantially.
An initial 10–12 session course produces the clearest benefit. Monthly maintenance sustains improvement long-term.
