Acupuncture for Tinnitus in Mumbai
The ringing, buzzing, or hissing that never stops. Acupuncture addresses the neurological and constitutional patterns generating tinnitus.
Sound Without a Source — and Why It's So Hard to Treat
Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of an external acoustic stimulus — ringing, buzzing, hissing, whistling, or roaring, in one or both ears. It affects an estimated 10–15% of the global population and significantly impairs sleep, concentration, and emotional wellbeing. Severe tinnitus is associated with anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal.
The mechanisms are complex: cochlear damage (noise exposure, ototoxic drugs, age-related hearing loss), central auditory pathway dysregulation, vascular conditions, temporomandibular disorder, cervical dysfunction, and in many cases, no identifiable structural cause. Standard ENT management — sound therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, tinnitus retraining — helps patients habituate but does not reduce the underlying signal.
In TCM, tinnitus is primarily a Kidney condition — the Kidney "opens into the ear" and Kidney deficiency (the most common pattern, particularly in older patients) produces the thin, high-pitched tinnitus of deficiency. Liver Yang Rising produces a louder, more variable tinnitus worsening with stress. Phlegm-Fire produces a heavy, low-pitched quality.
How Acupuncture Reduces Tinnitus
Cochlear blood flow improvement
Acupuncture improves cochlear microcirculation through autonomic vasodilation — potentially addressing the vascular component of tinnitus in patients with impaired cochlear perfusion.
Central auditory pathway modulation
Acupuncture at local ear points (SJ-17, GB-2, SI-19, SJ-21) and distal points (SJ-3, GB-43) influences the central auditory pathway — reducing the aberrant neural activity generating phantom sound.
Kidney tonification
KD-3, KD-6, and BL-23 tonify Kidney — the constitutional foundation of ear health in TCM. This is the primary treatment for thin, high-pitched, chronic tinnitus in older patients.
Liver Yang descension
For stress-worsened, variable tinnitus — LV-3, GB-43, and KD-1 descend Liver Yang and reduce the neurological hyperactivation amplifying the tinnitus signal.
What the Research Says
Acupuncture for tinnitus has a growing evidence base. A 2018 systematic review found acupuncture significantly reducing tinnitus loudness and distress scores compared to sham and standard care. Studies show acupuncture improving tinnitus handicap inventory scores, sleep quality, and anxiety in tinnitus patients — addressing the full impact of the condition rather than the sound alone. For somatosensory tinnitus (influenced by jaw and neck movement), acupuncture's TMJ and cervical treatment provi…

Tinnitus Treatment at Balancepoint
Acute tinnitus (under 3 months)
8–10 sessions. The earlier treatment begins, the better the outcomes. Local ear point protocol combined with constitutional treatment.
Chronic tinnitus (3+ months)
12–15 sessions. Constitutional Kidney or Liver treatment combined with central auditory pathway modulation. Realistic expectation: reduction in loudness and distress, not necessarily complete elimination.
Associated cervical or TMJ dysfunction
Additional cervical and TMJ treatment significantly improves somatosensory tinnitus.
I'd had tinnitus for 8 months after a loud concert. My ENT said there was nothing to be done and referred me to a sound therapist. our team treated me for 12 sessions. The tinnitus didn't disappear entirely but reduced from a constant loud ringing to an intermittent quiet hiss that I barely notice.
