Understanding the Condition

When Nerves Lose Their Signal — and Why It's So Hard to Treat

Peripheral neuropathy is damage to the peripheral nerves — those outside the brain and spinal cord — producing the characteristic symptoms of burning or shooting pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness, typically in a "stocking and glove" distribution starting in the feet and hands.

The most common cause in India is diabetic peripheral neuropathy — affecting an estimated 30–50% of people with diabetes and representing the most prevalent neuropathy globally. Other causes include chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, vitamin B12 deficiency, autoimmune conditions, alcohol-related neuropathy, and idiopathic neuropathy where no cause is found.

Standard treatment is symptomatic — gabapentin, pregabalin, duloxetine, and amitriptyline reduce pain but do not address the underlying nerve pathology and carry significant side effects. For diabetic neuropathy specifically, glycaemic control slows progression but does not reverse existing damage. Acupuncture offers a mechanism distinct from pharmacological pain management — stimulating nerve repair and improving the metabolic environment in which damaged nerves exist.

TCM Perspective

In TCM, peripheral neuropathy reflects Qi and Blood stasis in the channels of the limbs, combined with underlying deficiency patterns — Kidney deficiency (the most common constitutional root), Blood deficiency (insufficient nourishment for nerves), or Damp-Heat (in chemotherapy-associated presentations).

Mechanism of Action

How Acupuncture Addresses Nerve Damage

Nerve regeneration stimulation

Acupuncture increases nerve growth factor (NGF) production in denervated tissue — stimulating Schwann cell activity and axonal regeneration in damaged peripheral nerves.

Microcirculatory improvement

Diabetic neuropathy is partly driven by microvascular insufficiency — reduced blood flow to the vasa nervorum (the blood vessels that supply peripheral nerves). Acupuncture improves peripheral microcirculation, restoring metabolic support to the damaged nerves.

Central pain desensitisation

The burning and allodynia of neuropathic pain involves central sensitisation. Acupuncture downregulates spinal cord dorsal horn sensitisation — reducing the neuropathic pain signal independently of peripheral nerve status.

Electroacupuncture

For established neuropathy, electroacupuncture provides direct electrical stimulation of nerve pathways — the most effective acupuncture modality for nerve conduction recovery.

Kidney tonification

The constitutional deficiency pattern underlying most chronic neuropathy requires systemic treatment — KD-3, BL-23, SP-6, and ST-36 replenish the Kidney and Blood essential for nerve health.

Evidence Base

What the Research Says

Acupuncture for peripheral neuropathy has significant clinical evidence. A 2017 systematic review found acupuncture significantly superior to pregabalin for diabetic peripheral neuropathy — reducing pain and improving nerve conduction velocity. For chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, a 2019 RCT found acupuncture reducing symptoms in 80% of patients versus 30% in standard care. Nerve conduction studies in treated patients show measurable improvements in sensory and motor nerve conduction …

Treatment at Balancepoint

Peripheral Neuropathy Treatment at Balancepoint

01

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy

12–15 sessions. Electroacupuncture for nerve stimulation combined with Kidney tonification and microcirculation protocol. Glycaemic control assessment discussed with patient's physician.

02

Chemotherapy-induced neuropathy

10–12 sessions. Anti-Damp-Heat protocol combined with Qi and Blood nourishment.

03

Idiopathic neuropathy

12-session constitutional course. Thorough TCM pattern assessment to identify the specific deficiency pattern.

04

Maintenance

Monthly sessions to sustain nerve function improvement and slow progression.

Patient Experience
I've had diabetic neuropathy for 6 years. The burning in my feet was constant — worse at night. I'd tried every medication. After 12 sessions with our team the burning reduced by about 60% and my sleep improved dramatically. My nerve conduction test showed improvement on repeat.

Frequently Asked

Your Questions Answered

Acupuncture stimulates nerve repair and can produce measurable improvements in nerve conduction velocity — evidence of genuine nerve recovery. Complete reversal of established damage depends on its severity and duration.
Peripheral neuropathy requires an extended course — 12–15 sessions initially. The condition took time to develop; recovery takes time too.
Yes. Acupuncture and gabapentin/pregabalin work through different mechanisms and are complementary. Many patients reduce medication doses as acupuncture takes effect — managed with their physician.
