Acupuncture for Children in Mumbai
Gentle, safe, and clinically effective. Paediatric acupuncture at Balancepoint uses child-adapted techniques — needles where appropriate, moxibustion and Sujok where not.
TCM for Children — Adapted, Gentle, Effective
Children are not small adults. Their physiology, their relationship with needles, and the conditions they present with all differ significantly from adult medicine. Paediatric TCM at Balancepoint is designed around these differences — using the full range of TCM modalities, with needles used only where appropriate and tolerance allows.
The most common paediatric presentations at Balancepoint are eczema, asthma and recurrent respiratory infections, bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis), ADHD, digestive complaints (recurrent abdominal pain, constipation), and childhood alopecia. All of these have strong evidence bases for TCM treatment.
Children often respond to acupuncture faster than adults — their systems are less fixed, their constitutions are more responsive, and the constitutional imbalances driving their conditions are typically less entrenched. This makes paediatric TCM one of the most rewarding clinical areas.
Priya Samwani, TCM Physician, has treated children since the earliest years of her practice — including children with alopecia, a condition that has defined Balancepoint's paediatric reputation in Mumbai.
How TCM Treats Children
Needle technique
For children who tolerate needles, paediatric acupuncture uses finer needles, shorter retention times (often 10–15 minutes versus 25–30 for adults), and fewer points per session. The experience is designed to be calm and non-threatening.
Non-needle modalities
For younger children or those needle-averse, Balancepoint uses moxibustion (heat application over points), Sujok (micro-system treatment on hands and feet), auricular seeds, and paediatric Tui Na (TCM massage). Full treatment is achievable without needles.
Spleen and Lung tonification
The most common paediatric pattern — Spleen and Lung Qi deficiency — underlies susceptibility to infections, eczema, asthma, and poor appetite. ST-36, SP-6, LU-7, and BL-13 build the immune and digestive foundation.
Kidney Jing support
For children with constitutional weakness — recurrent illness, developmental concerns, bedwetting — Kidney tonification at KD-3 and BL-23 with moxibustion at CV-4 builds the constitutional root.
What the Research Says
Paediatric acupuncture has a substantial and growing evidence base. Systematic reviews confirm acupuncture significantly reducing eczema severity in children, reducing asthma attack frequency, resolving bedwetting, and improving ADHD symptom scores. Safety data across thousands of paediatric acupuncture patients consistently shows an excellent safety profile when delivered by trained practitioners. The WHO lists multiple childhood conditions as indications for acupuncture.

My 7-year-old daughter had eczema and recurrent chest infections from age 2. We were on a cycle of steroids and antibiotics constantly. Priya Samwani treated her for 3 months using gentle acupuncture and moxibustion. The eczema reduced by 80% and she hasn't needed antibiotics in 14 months. It changed our family's life.
