Understanding the Condition

The Most Common Chronic Skin Condition in Children — and One of the Most Distressing

Atopic dermatitis affects 10–20% of children globally and is the most common chronic inflammatory skin condition in childhood. The itch-scratch cycle — intense itch driving scratching, which damages the skin, which worsens inflammation, which intensifies itch — produces significant sleep disruption, distress, and quality of life impairment for both children and their families.

In Mumbai's climate — hot, humid, high dust mite load, and high pollution — eczema triggers are constant and unavoidable. The condition typically begins in infancy, follows an unpredictable course of flares and relative remissions, and frequently co-exists with asthma and allergic rhinitis (the atopic triad).

Topical steroids are effective for managing flares but produce skin thinning with prolonged use, and many parents are understandably concerned about long-term steroid exposure in children. Tacrolimus provides a non-steroid alternative but has its own limitations.

TCM Perspective

In TCM, childhood eczema involves Damp-Heat in the skin (acute, weeping, red), Wind-Heat (dry, intensely itchy), or Spleen deficiency with Damp (chronic, mild, with digestive overlay). Identifying the pattern determines the treatment.

How Acupuncture Reduces Eczema in Children

Immune modulation

Acupuncture shifts the Th1/Th2 balance in atopic children — reducing the Th2 skewing driving IgE overproduction and mast cell sensitisation that underlies atopic eczema. Studies show reductions in serum IgE and eosinophil counts in treated children.

Itch reduction

LI-11 (Quchi) — one of TCM's most studied anti-itch points — reduces histamine release and modulates the central itch pathway. Rapid itch reduction is often the first and most welcomed response in children.

Blood Heat and Wind clearing

SP-10, BL-17, and LI-11 cool Blood Heat and clear Wind — the TCM mechanisms for the red, intensely itchy acute eczema pattern most common in children.

Spleen Damp resolution

For children with chronic, low-grade eczema with digestive complaints — SP-9, ST-36, and BL-20 resolve Spleen Damp, addressing the digestive and immune root simultaneously.

Non-needle options

For younger children or those needle-averse, moxibustion and auricular seeds can deliver significant immune-modulating and anti-itch effects without needles.

Evidence Base

What the Research Says

Paediatric acupuncture for eczema has consistent positive evidence. A 2015 systematic review found acupuncture significantly reducing SCORAD (eczema severity) scores and itch intensity in children, with superior sleep outcomes compared to standard topical treatment. Studies specifically in children show acupuncture reducing serum IgE and improving skin barrier function over a treatment course. For the itch-sleep disruption cycle specifically — one of eczema's most disabling features in children …

Treatment at Balancepoint

Childhood Eczema Treatment at Balancepoint

01

Acute flare

4–6 sessions to reduce active inflammation, itch, and sleep disruption. Immediate itch relief typically occurs within the first 1–2 sessions.

02

Flare prevention course

10–12 sessions over 3 months. Immune modulation builds progressively — reducing flare frequency and severity over the course. The most important treatment phase for long-term eczema management.

03

Age-adapted technique

Priya Samwani has extensive experience treating children of all ages. For young children, sessions are shorter, needle count is lower, and moxibustion is used more extensively. The experience is designed to be positive.

04

Dietary guidance

TCM dietary recommendations — identifying the Damp-generating and Heat-generating foods contributing to the child's pattern — provided alongside treatment.

Patient Experience
My daughter had eczema from age 6 months. By age 4 we were on regular steroid courses and they were increasingly less effective. Priya Samwani treated her for 3 months — gentle needling and moxibustion. The flares went from every 3 weeks to one in 8 months. We've reduced steroids to almost nothing. The change has been life-changing for our family.

Frequently Asked

Your Questions Answered

Balancepoint treats children from age 3 upward with adapted techniques. For infants and toddlers, moxibustion and auricular seeds are used without needles.
Yes — reducing steroid dependence is one of the most practically significant benefits. As acupuncture builds immune modulation, flares become less frequent and less severe — reducing the need for repeated steroid courses.
Itch reduction often begins within the first 1–2 sessions — providing immediate relief for children whose sleep is disrupted by eczema.
