Acupuncture for Immunity in Mumbai

A body that keeps getting sick is telling you something. TCM doesn’t just treat the illness — it rebuilds the system that keeps letting it in.

Understanding the Condition

When Your Body Can’t Keep Up — and Medicine Doesn’t Have a Full Answer

Low immunity is not a single disease — it is a pattern of chronic vulnerability. Frequent colds, slow recovery from illness, persistent fatigue, allergies that won’t settle, and infections that linger weeks longer than they should. Western medicine addresses individual symptoms — antihistamines for allergies, vitamins for energy, antibiotics for infections — but rarely looks at why the system keeps failing. The result is a cycle of managing episodes rather than correcting the underlying deficiency.

Post-COVID has added a new dimension: patients who recovered from the virus months ago but remain locked in exhaustion, brain fog, and immune dysregulation — as if the system never fully rebooted.

TCM Perspective

Wei Qi — the Body’s Defensive Layer

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, immunity is governed by Wei Qi — the body’s defensive energy that circulates at the surface, protecting against external pathogens. Strong Wei Qi means the body deflects illness easily. Depleted Wei Qi means the border is porous — every cold finds its way in, every infection takes longer to clear, every season change is a threat.

Wei Qi is produced and replenished by three organ systems: the Lung (which governs the surface and breath), the Spleen (which generates Qi from food), and the Kidney (which holds the root energy). When any of these are weakened — by overwork, chronic stress, poor diet, long illness, or grief — immunity drops and stays down. TCM treatment rebuilds from the root, not just the surface.

TCM Diagnosis

Common Immune Patterns We Treat

No two patients with low immunity have the same underlying pattern. Your practitioner identifies which of these is primary — and treats accordingly.

Primary Pattern Wei Qi & Lung Deficiency

The most common presentation — frequent colds, easy sweating, aversion to cold air, slow recovery from illness. The Lung’s defensive function is inadequate.

Secondary Pattern Spleen Qi Deficiency

Low energy after eating, poor digestion, loose stools, fatigue, puffiness. The Spleen cannot generate enough Qi to fuel immunity from the inside.

Root Cause Kidney Yang Deficiency

Deep chronic fatigue, cold extremities, poor concentration, long-standing exhaustion. The constitutional root has been depleted — this pattern underlies most chronic immune failure and post-viral syndromes.

Contributing Factor Lingering Pathogen

Particularly relevant in post-COVID and post-viral fatigue. An unresolved pathogen has embedded in the body, preventing full recovery and keeping immunity chronically suppressed.

Mechanism of Action

How Acupuncture Rebuilds Immune Function

Natural Killer Cell Activation

Acupuncture at ST36 (Zusanli) increases Natural Killer cell activity — the immune system’s first responders against viral infection. Effects are measurable in blood within hours of treatment and sustained across a course.

T-Cell Regulation

Needling modulates the ratio of T-helper to T-suppressor cells — correcting underactive immunity (frequent infections) and overactive immune response (allergies, autoimmune flares) from the same mechanism.

Cortisol & HPA Axis

Chronic stress suppresses immunity via cortisol. Acupuncture downregulates the stress axis — one of the most consistent findings in acupuncture research — directly restoring immune function compromised by psychological or physical stress.

Cytokine Regulation

Acupuncture influences interleukins and interferon production — the inflammatory signalling molecules central to immune response. This reduces chronic low-grade inflammation while preserving acute immune capacity.

Gut-Immune Axis

70–80% of immune tissue lives in the gut. TCM’s dietary protocols and Spleen-strengthening treatments directly support gut microbiome integrity and intestinal lining health — both foundational to immune competence.

Bone Marrow Stimulation

Research indicates acupuncture enhances haematopoiesis — the production of white blood cells from bone marrow — increasing the body’s total immune cell output over a course of regular treatment.

Evidence Base

What the Research Says

The evidence for acupuncture and immune function is multidimensional. A large German randomised trial in Annals of Internal Medicine (2013) found acupuncture significantly outperformed antihistamines alone in seasonal allergic rhinitis — leading to WHO Category 1 classification. Emerging post-COVID research from China (2021–2023) demonstrates meaningful improvement in fatigue scores, respiratory function, and quality of life in Long COVID patients treated with acupuncture alongside standard care. Across studies, the consistent finding is that acupuncture’s immune effects are systemic — improving energy, sleep, resistance to infection, and mood simultaneously — matching the multisystem nature of immune decline better than any single-target pharmaceutical intervention.

WHO Category 1 — Allergic Rhinitis Cochrane-Reviewed RCT Evidence Evidence-Based
Allergies

A 487-patient German RCT found acupuncture significantly improved quality of life and symptom scores in hay fever compared to antihistamines — now cited by WHO and NICE.

NK Cell Activity

Multiple studies document measurable increases in Natural Killer cell activity following acupuncture at ST36 — effects sustained up to 24 hours post-treatment.

Post-COVID

Clinical data from 2021–2023 shows acupuncture improving fatigue, breathlessness, and cognitive function in Long COVID patients when integrated with standard care.

Treatment at Balancepoint

Immunity Treatment at Balancepoint

01

Initial Assessment + First Treatment

Your first session includes a full TCM assessment (15–20 min) followed immediately by treatment (45–60 min). We assess pulse, tongue, constitution, diet, sleep, and stress — identifying the specific pattern driving your immune vulnerability. No commitment required after this session.

02

Core Course — Sessions 2 to 8

Weekly sessions building Wei Qi and addressing the root organ deficiency. Key points vary by pattern but typically include ST36, SP6, LU7, GV14, CV6, and KD3. Moxibustion added where Yang deficiency is present. Most patients report fewer infections, improved energy, and better recovery within 4–6 sessions. Herbal and dietary guidance is included.

03

Maintenance & Seasonal Prevention

Once baseline immunity stabilises, monthly or seasonal sessions maintain results. Particularly effective before monsoon and winter, or during periods of high stress or travel. Many patients at Balancepoint use seasonal TCM maintenance as their primary preventive healthcare.

“I used to catch every cold that came through the office — four or five times a year, and each one would sit with me for weeks. After eight sessions at Balancepoint, I haven’t had a single infection in six months. My energy is better, my sleep is better. I didn’t expect TCM to change this much.”

Frequently Asked

Your Questions Answered

  • Can acupuncture actually improve the immune system?

Yes — and this is one of the better-researched areas of acupuncture. Documented effects include increases in Natural Killer cell activity, T-cell modulation, white blood cell production, and reduction in cortisol — which directly suppresses immunity when elevated. These are measurable physiological changes, not just symptomatic relief. The WHO classifies acupuncture as a Category 1 intervention for allergic rhinitis specifically, and broader immune research continues to grow.

  • How many sessions until I see a difference?

Most patients notice early improvements — better energy, deeper sleep, fewer allergy symptoms — within 4–6 sessions. Significant immune rebuilding, particularly for patients with long-standing fatigue or post-viral syndromes, typically takes 8–12 sessions over 2–3 months. Seasonal maintenance every 4–6 weeks sustains and deepens results.

  • Can TCM help with post-COVID fatigue and Long COVID?

Yes — this is an active area of TCM clinical practice at Balancepoint. Long COVID presentations including fatigue, brain fog, breathlessness, and ongoing immune dysregulation correspond closely to Lung and Kidney deficiency with lingering pathogen — patterns TCM has treated for centuries. Clinical improvement in post-COVID patients is frequently reported within 4–8 sessions. We treat this in combination with your existing medical care, not in place of it.

  • Is TCM safe alongside my current medications?

Generally yes. Acupuncture has no systemic pharmacological interactions. If herbal medicine is part of your treatment plan, we review known interactions with your current medications before prescribing anything. All patients disclose their current medications during the initial assessment. We coordinate with your physician where clinically appropriate.

  • Can I come for immunity treatment when I’m not currently sick?

This is the ideal time to start. Preventive treatment before illness occurs is a core TCM principle — strengthening Wei Qi while the body has the resources to receive it, rather than trying to rebuild under the strain of active illness. Seasonal immune maintenance before monsoon or winter is one of the most commonly requested treatments at Balancepoint.
