Acupuncture for Long COVID in Mumbai

The virus has gone. The illness hasn't. Long COVID is a multi-system condition that acupuncture addresses at every level — fatigue, cognition, breathlessness, autonomic dysregulation.

Understanding the Condition

When Recovery Stalls After COVID-19

Long COVID — post-COVID syndrome — is defined as symptoms persisting beyond 12 weeks following acute COVID-19 infection. It affects an estimated 10–30% of people who contract COVID-19 and represents one of the most significant ongoing public health challenges in Mumbai, where millions experienced infection during the 2020–2022 waves.

The symptom burden is wide and overlapping. The most prevalent symptoms are profound fatigue unrelieved by rest, cognitive impairment and brain fog, breathlessness on exertion, post-exertional malaise (symptom worsening after physical or mental effort), sleep disruption, palpitations, joint and muscle pain, anxiety and mood disturbance, and dysautonomia (heart rate and blood pressure instability on standing).

The underlying pathophysiology is multi-layered: persistent neuroinflammation, autonomic nervous system dysregulation, endothelial and microvascular damage, immune dysregulation with persistent inflammatory activation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and HPA axis disruption. No single pharmacological approach addresses all these mechanisms — which is why standard medical management of long COVID remains largely symptomatic and inadequate.

TCM Perspective

In TCM, long COVID presents most commonly as Lung and Spleen Qi deficiency with residual Damp-Heat — incomplete pathogen resolution leaving the system burdened and depleted. In prolonged cases, this deepens into Kidney deficiency with Qi and Blood stasis.

Mechanism of Action

How Acupuncture Addresses Long COVID Systematically

Neuroinflammation reduction

Central inflammatory cytokines — IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β — drive the neuroinflammation producing long COVID brain fog and fatigue. Acupuncture reduces these cytokines through the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, directly addressing the neurological burden.

Autonomic nervous system restoration

Post-COVID dysautonomia — tachycardia on standing, blood pressure instability, exercise intolerance — reflects sympathetic dominance and lost autonomic flexibility. Acupuncture's parasympathetic-activating effect systematically restores autonomic balance, reducing palpitations, postural dizziness, a

Mitochondrial support

The cellular energy deficit underlying long COVID fatigue is partly mitochondrial. Acupuncture improves mitochondrial function and ATP synthesis — addressing fatigue at its cellular root.

Lung rehabilitation

Residual breathlessness and reduced exercise capacity from COVID lung involvement respond to the Lung Qi and Kidney Qi grasping protocol — restoring respiratory function and exercise tolerance progressively.

Qi and Blood stasis resolution

The microvascular damage and Blood stasis contributing to long COVID cognitive and muscular symptoms are addressed through SP-10, BL-17, and LV-3 — moving Blood and resolving the stagnation perpetuating symptoms.

Evidence Base

What the Research Says

Acupuncture for long COVID has rapidly accumulated positive evidence. A 2022 RCT (120 patients) found acupuncture significantly improving fatigue, cognitive symptoms, sleep, and respiratory function compared to standard rehabilitation. A 2023 systematic review confirmed acupuncture's benefit across the major long COVID symptom domains. Multiple long COVID rehabilitation programmes internationally now integrate acupuncture as a standard component. Mechanistic studies confirm acupuncture reducing …

Treatment at Balancepoint

Long COVID Treatment at Balancepoint

01

Acute post-COVID (1–3 months post-infection)

10–12 sessions, twice weekly. Anti-inflammatory and Lung rehabilitation protocol. The primary recovery window — most patients see significant improvement within this course.

02

Prolonged long COVID (3–12+ months)

12–15 session constitutional course with Kidney and Spleen tonification. Moxibustion central to the protocol. Recovery is slower but consistent.

03

Symptom-led focus

Treatment is tailored to the dominant presentation — cognitive, respiratory, fatigue, autonomic, or pain-predominant — while addressing the constitutional pattern throughout.

04

Pacing

Post-exertional malaise is managed carefully — treatment is adapted during crashes and never pushes through PEM.

Patient Experience
18 months after COVID I was still barely functional. Crushing fatigue, brain fog, and breathlessness going upstairs. I'd tried everything conventional medicine offered. our team treated me for 4 months — weekly sessions with moxibustion. By month 3 I was back at work full-time. By month 4 I was exercising again. It was the only intervention that moved the needle.

Frequently Asked

Your Questions Answered

Yes. Prolonged long COVID responds to acupuncture — recovery is slower than in acute post-COVID but consistent and meaningful improvement is achievable at any stage.
Acute post-COVID: 10–12 sessions. Prolonged long COVID: 12–15 sessions minimum, with ongoing monthly maintenance.
Yes — with modified, gentler treatment during crashes. Suspending treatment during crashes slows recovery; modified treatment supports it.
