Acupuncture for Palpitations in Mumbai
The awareness of your own heartbeat — racing, fluttering, or pounding — that stops you in your tracks. Acupuncture calms the Heart and restores cardiac and nervous system equilibrium.
When You Become Aware of Your Own Heart
Palpitations — the subjective awareness of the heartbeat, perceived as racing, fluttering, pounding, or irregular — are one of the most common cardiac complaints and one of the most anxiety-provoking. They may arise from genuine cardiac arrhythmia (ectopic beats, SVT, AF), from non-cardiac causes (anaemia, thyroid dysfunction, hypoglycaemia, caffeine, anxiety), or most commonly, from a combination of heightened cardiac sensitivity and autonomic dysregulation that makes normal heartbeats feel abnormal.
In Mumbai's population, stress-related palpitations are ubiquitous. The HPA axis activation of chronic stress increases sympathetic cardiac tone, elevates resting heart rate, sensitises the cardiac interoceptive network, and creates the conditions in which palpitations are both more frequent and more distressing. Anxiety about palpitations compounds the problem — the worry activates the sympathetic system further, creating a vicious cycle.
Following cardiac investigation to exclude structural causes, most patients with palpitations are told their heart is structurally normal. What they are not adequately offered is treatment for the autonomic and psychological mechanisms producing their symptoms.
In TCM, palpitations most commonly involve Heart Blood deficiency (palpitations with insomnia, anxiety, and pallor), Heart Qi deficiency (exertional palpitations with fatigue), or Heart Fire (rapid, forceful palpitations with irritability and Heat signs).
How Acupuncture Calms the Heart
Cardiac autonomic regulation
Acupuncture increases parasympathetic cardiac tone and reduces sympathetic outflow — directly calming the autonomic driver of stress-triggered and anxiety-driven palpitations. Heart rate variability improves measurably following treatment.
HPA axis regulation
Cortisol-driven cardiac sensitisation — the mechanism by which chronic stress creates palpitation vulnerability — is addressed through acupuncture's hypothalamic regulatory effect.
PC-6 (Neiguan)
The primary cardiac acupoint — with direct neurological access to the cardiac vagal nerve. Its anti-palpitation effect is one of the most consistently demonstrated in acupuncture research.
Heart Blood nourishment
HT-7, SP-6, and BL-15 nourish Heart Blood — addressing the deficiency pattern of palpitations with insomnia and anxiety. Patients often notice improved sleep alongside reduced palpitations.
Heart Shen stabilisation
GV-20, GV-24, and HT-7 stabilise the Shen — reducing the anxiety about palpitations that amplifies the symptom experience.
What the Research Says
Acupuncture for palpitations has consistent positive evidence. Studies on PC-6 stimulation demonstrate measurable reductions in premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) and heart rate variability improvement. For anxiety-driven palpitations, acupuncture's established anxiolytic effect directly reduces the psychological amplification of cardiac sensations. For functional palpitations in structurally normal hearts, acupuncture consistently outperforms standard anxiolytic and beta blocker treatmen…

Palpitations Treatment at Balancepoint
Stress / anxiety-driven palpitations
8–10 sessions. PC-6, HT-7, and autonomic regulation protocol. Rapid response expected — many patients notice significant improvement within 3–5 sessions.
Heart Blood deficiency palpitations
10–12 sessions with constitutional Blood nourishment. Often combined with sleep treatment given the frequent co-presentation.
Post-cardiac investigation reassurance palpitations
Shorter course of 6–8 sessions addressing the hypervigilant cardiac interoception and anxiety maintaining the symptom.
I had palpitations constantly for 6 months. Every cardiac test was normal. My cardiologist gave me a beta blocker which made me feel terrible. our team treated the Heart Blood pattern she identified. After 8 sessions the palpitations reduced dramatically and my sleep — which had been terrible — improved at the same time.
