Understanding the Condition

When the Heart Loses Its Rhythm

Cardiac arrhythmia is any disturbance in the normal electrical rhythm of the heart — producing heartbeats that are too fast (tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia), irregular, or originating from abnormal sites. The most common arrhythmias encountered in clinical practice are atrial fibrillation (AF), supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), ventricular ectopic beats (VEBs — "skipped beats"), and sinus node dysfunction.

Many arrhythmias have structural or electrophysiological causes requiring cardiac intervention — ablation, cardioversion, pacemaker. But a significant proportion — particularly vagally-mediated AF, stress-triggered SVT, and symptomatic VEBs in structurally normal hearts — have a strong autonomic nervous system component. In these patients, ANS dysregulation (sympathetic dominance, reduced heart rate variability) is a primary driver of arrhythmia vulnerability.

Acupuncture does not replace antiarrhythmic medication or cardiac procedures. It addresses the autonomic and inflammatory mechanisms contributing to arrhythmia burden — reducing episode frequency, duration, and symptom burden in appropriately selected patients.

TCM Perspective

In TCM, arrhythmia involves Heart Qi or Yang deficiency (slow, irregular rhythm with fatigue), Heart Blood deficiency (palpitations with anxiety and poor sleep), or Heart Fire (rapid, forceful palpitations with emotional triggers).

Mechanism of Action

How Acupuncture Regulates Heart Rhythm

Autonomic cardiac regulation

Acupuncture increases heart rate variability (HRV) — the most sensitive marker of cardiac autonomic function and a direct predictor of arrhythmia vulnerability. Higher HRV reflects better autonomic flexibility and reduced arrhythmia risk.

Vagal tone enhancement

PC-6 (Neiguan) and HT-7 (Shenmen) directly influence cardiac vagal tone through the cardiac branch of the vagus nerve — slowing conduction through the AV node and reducing the excitability of ectopic pacemaker sites.

Anti-inflammatory cardiac protection

Cardiac inflammation underlies both AF initiation and perpetuation. Acupuncture's anti-inflammatory effect — reducing IL-6 and CRP — reduces the inflammatory substrate for AF.

Heart Qi tonification

CV-14, PC-6, HT-7, and BL-15 tonify Heart Qi and calm the Shen — addressing the deficiency and restlessness driving palpitations and cardiac dysrhythmia in TCM.

Evidence Base

What the Research Says

Acupuncture for cardiac arrhythmia has meaningful clinical evidence. A 2011 study in the Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology found acupuncture significantly reducing AF recurrence after cardioversion versus medication alone. Multiple studies show acupuncture increasing HRV — directly improving cardiac autonomic function. For VEBs in structurally normal hearts, acupuncture's vagal tone enhancement reduces ectopic focus excitability. The WHO lists cardiac arrhythmias as an indication for a…

Treatment at Balancepoint

Arrhythmia Treatment at Balancepoint

01

Vagally-mediated AF / stress-triggered SVT

10–12 sessions. Autonomic regulation with PC-6, HT-7, and GV-14. HRV monitoring where available.

02

Symptomatic VEBs

8–10 sessions. Heart Qi and Shen treatment. Often one of the most satisfying responses — many patients with structurally normal hearts achieve near-complete ectopic suppression.

03

Coordination with cardiologist

All treatment is delivered as an adjunct to your cardiac management. Electrocardiographic monitoring is maintained throughout.

Patient Experience
I had frequent VEBs — felt like the heart was constantly skipping beats. My cardiologist said structurally everything was fine and gave me a beta blocker I couldn't tolerate. our team treated the Heart Qi pattern she identified. After 8 sessions the VEBs reduced by about 80%. I'm off the beta blocker.

Frequently Asked

Your Questions Answered

Acupuncture is most effective for vagally-mediated and stress-triggered AF, and for reducing recurrence after cardioversion. Persistent or permanent AF with structural causes requires primary cardiac management.
Yes. Acupuncture and antiarrhythmic medication have complementary mechanisms and are safe in combination.
VEBs often respond within 4–6 sessions. AF recurrence reduction is assessed over the full course of 10–12 sessions.
